Meters To Be Installed In Households Using Solar Power
COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore corporation is likely to introduce meters for solar energy users this year. The civic body received a green signal from the Centre to implement the solar city project in Coimbatore in February. The first step is to implement the solar net metering in households.

It will also set up 70KW solar power plants at the Velliangadu Pillur water pumping station, Vellalore dump yard and Ukkadam and Ondipudur sewage treatment plants at a cost of Rs3.75 crore.

Coimbatore corporation submitted a plan to the ministry of new and renewable energy for its solar city project in 2012. The plan had details about the city's power consumption, usage of renewable energy and plans to reduce the power consumption by 50%. "We submitted it in 2012 but only on February 2 this year, we received a letter saying that our project report had been accepted and we were selected for the solar city pilot project," said an official of the corporation.

Over the last two years, the corporation has installed solar panels in corporation offices, maternity homes, bus stands and schools. The official said the city corporation will compete for the energy conservation award. "We have implemented several solar projects. We will run awareness programmes and campaigns from next week about the introduction of solar net metering in households in association with Tangedco so that the power consumption of the city reduces," said the official.
