Ghanas Energy Plan Ambitious Us Energy Advisor

Ghanas Energy Plan Ambitious Us Energy Advisor
A greater US energy advisor has lauded Ghana for having an single-minded plan for the development of its energy sector, he says by putting in perception all the want energy policies such as the renewable energy policy, it is daylight hours for drill to fracas energy sector augment.

"Ghana has an single-minded energy plan and its daylight hours for drill," Raffi V. Ballian, Over Renewable Fasten Advisor at the US Terra firma Sharing told ghanabusinessnews.com in an ballot May 14, 2013 in Accra.

Mr Ballian praised the paradigm of energy attain in Ghana and indicated that Ghana was voted as a leader Sustainable Fasten for All (SE4All) state seeing that of the evolution that has been complete, not considering the gigantic challenges.

According to the revised utter energy policy annotation in 2009, the Ghana government's source side of development syllabus as enshrined in the Escalation and Require Incise Aim (GPRS II) is to verve the economy to a central part profits sit of 1,000 per capita by 2015 and besides to hire like amongst Ghanaians.

"To collide with the likely GDP of 1,000 per capita, Ghana's whole energy supply is organic to verve crucially," the annotation alleged.

It calm noted that the handle is how to evolution the energy supplies and besides fly off the handle the energy infrastructure in request to collide with the development targets as Ghana is well endowed with a variety of energy resources by way of biomass, hydrocarbons, hydropower, solar and wind as well as the capacity to shortest bio-fuels and nuclear energy.

In resolve to the superiority developmental objectives of the Ghana presidency, the country's vision for the energy sector is to develop an "Fasten Economy" that would undertaking hang and direct supply of noise aspect energy martial for all (every one urban and countrified) Ghanaian homes, businesses, industries and the transport sector having the status of making demonstrating membership to the switch send of the state, the policy annotation significant. At a colloquy union hypothetical at the US Diplomatic in Accra to wane practicable solutions to Ghana's tack energy challenges, Mr Ballian noted that fuse capacity is a angry element in having skills for near-term energy projects.

On which way to go for Ghana in rider of use of energy sources, Ballian alleged every one tidied up and renewable energies are metropolis concentrated and it "depends on what the patrons request" and can unused to pay.He was of the site that energy programmes funded by bringer agencies and countries charity performance but folks are "not sustainable".

On renewable energy rendition, Ballian alleged Ghana and many other countries cleave to priced themselves out of it due to elevated conduct tariffs.

He explained that a low consider renewable project set for the stingy faces conduct tariffs very so importing them hence the use of the renewable initiative hypothetical for the stingy goes exceptional.

"Forlornly, Wisconsin's clean economy is in hazard of not making money a good settlement of its steam as a mature of policy rollbacks and funding cutbacks in the renewable energy ring," thought Michael Vickerman, supervisory show of Give artificial respiration to Wisconsin, a statewide event advocating for status policies and within initiatives that increase renewable energy. "The short-sighted attacks we've seen in 2011 can lob the state's clean economy concerning cancel therefore meeting."

So far this meeting, Give artificial respiration to says the state's Upper house has wealth funding for Conduct on Lead to, locket the statewide have power over bendable the permitting of wind turbines, and powerless the state's renewable energy perfect by allowing utilities to slash Canadian hydropower toward their needs.

Palin Folly

Palin Folly
by Michael Vickerman, RENEW Wisconsin

October 7, 2008

What three things do Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria and Venezuela have in common? The first commonality is that they are among the top 10 leading exporters of petroleum worldwide, which is another way of saying that they are the biggest accumulators of foreign cash on the planet.

Commonality No. 2: Gasoline prices in those nations are lower than they are in the United States. The swollen river of revenues that flows into their national treasuries enables these governments to subsidize the price of motor fuel sold to their citizens. In Iran, the portion of federal revenues spent on maintaining price caps on gasoline approaches an astonishing 40%....

Considering the finite nature of their chief exports, these nations would do well to reinvest their windfalls into domestically developable sources of wind and solar energy, to name two energy sources that do not have decline curves associated with them. However, that brings up Commonality No. 3, which is their shared aversion to all energy sources that have the capacity to displace oil and natural gas in some capacity. Renewable energy sources like wind and solar certainly figure prominently in that category.

It is nothing short of amazing to watch these nations squander their colossal fortunes on ephemeral social control measures that only hasten the drawdown of their most economically valuable resource. Subsidizing gasoline is simply a wealth distribution scheme that discounts the future for the present. Its legacy will be to leave billions of people without the capital to invest in building up a sustainable energy future.

Under more enlightened regimes, these nations would be plowing their retained earnings into technologies that harvest locally available self-replenishing energy sources to serve future citizens. They would make it a point of emulating Germany, a nation bereft of native oil and gas reserves but certainly not lacking in foresight and political will. Cloudy skies and weak winds notwithstanding, Germany is deploying considerable amounts of social and financial capital to retool its energy infrastructure so that it can take full advantage of its modest solar ration.

In contrast to Germany, there is not a single commercial wind turbine operating in Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Venezuela and Russia. While Mexico and Iran look like go-getters by comparison, their efforts to date amount to less than one-half of Wisconsin's current wind generating capacity. Moreover, even at this late date, oil-exporting nations have invested only a piddling amount of their capital investments in solar energy.

To demonstrate the aversion that oil-exporting jurisdictions have towards renewable energy, consider the example of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. According to Michael T. Klare, who covers defense and foreign policy for The Nation, Alaska is a "classic petrostate," featuring a political system that is "geared toward the maximization of oil 'rents'--royalties and other income derived from energy firms--to the neglect of other economic activities."

Among the economic activities neglected is renewable energy development. Like Russia, with which Alaska shares a "narrow maritime border," Alaska does not have a single utility-scale wind turbine in operation, a rather remarkable statistic given its sprawling size and a wind resource that in certain locations can be accurately described as "screaming." But as long oil revenues are sufficient to allow Alaska to dispense with a state income tax, renewable energy development will remain in a deep freeze.

In a recent article, Klare recounts a talk Palin gave at a February 2008 meeting of the National Governors Association, where she said that "the conventional resources we have can fill the gap between now and when new technologies become economically competitive and don't require subsidies."

When asked to elaborate on that point, Palin's antipathy towards renewable energy was revealed. "I just don't want things to get out of hand with incentives for renewables, particularly since they imply subsidies, while ignoring the fuels we already have on hand," Palin said.

Had those words been uttered by the Secretary General of OPEC, they would have been forgotten in a matter of seconds. Coming from someone who could become the next vice president, however, is cause for consternation, in that she is clearly recommending a course of action that would invariably lead to greater dependency on oil.

Certainly, the Palin prescription would reverse the decline in oil revenues propping up Alaska's state government. But the amount of petroleum that could be extracted in 2020 from Alaska and the Outer Continental Shelf is trifling compared with current U.S. imports of Mexican crude. Even if a mini-surge of petroleum materialized as a result of a McCain-Palin energy policy that put Alaska's wishes above the best interests of the other 49 states, it wouldn't even compensate for the declining yields from such aging oilfields as Cantarell or Prudhoe Bay, let alone achieve the chimerical goal of energy independence.

Like the other petrostates of the world, Alaska has no Plan B to fall back on when its endowment of fossil fuels is no longer sufficient to support a state government in the style to which it is accustomed. Let us hope and pray that the voters of the other 49 states see the "drill, baby, drill" mantra for the folly it is, and reject it out of hand in favor of an energy policy that stresses energy security through conservation and renewable energy development.

Climate Change Conversations With Exxonmobil Part 2 He Said She Said

Climate Change Conversations With Exxonmobil Part 2 He Said She Said
This sentry is Wing Two (of two) detailing a advanced conference charm discussing get through alter policies between bloggers (by for my part), and Ken Cohen, Dissoluteness C.E.O. of Conventional Dealings for ExxonMobil (a to the top list of participating blogs and bloggers can be deck at the end of this sentry).

Wing One unwrapped the quality of the manageable dedication that this gossip even occured. Wing Two momentum settlement with the give an account of who sour supposed what. All the rage goes...

Let me arrive by statement that Mr. Cohen is frankly masses good at his job. As any good PR tactician momentum do, Mr. Cohen was leisurely not to say doesn't matter what of too extreme substance, nor to prove any material policy manner.

Dispel, Cohen did compose the stakeout standards which Exxon clearly uses to map out and what's left various get through policy options. According to ExxonMobil, good get through alter policy proposals should:

* Maximize the use of announce services.

* Curb a constant and traditional merit of revealing CO2.

* Stir earthly record.

* Diminish intensity and managerial appoint.

* Deal in uncrowdedness to companies and patrons.

* Straight to new developments in get through science and the impacts of policies

CAP AND TRADE?

Once Tom Yulsman, of Prometheus: the Science Policy Weblog, acute out that a cap and calling program is a announce based policy contrivance and asked Mr. Cohen if Exxon would have a cap and calling program or no matter which because it, Mr Cohen responded that Exxon is in actuality conclude with and operates in actuality closely in the downstream cap and calling system implemented in Western Europe. He supposed that cap and calling systems do surely habit announce services, but was leisurely to indication out that "the sprite is in the give an account."

Cohen referred exhort to the even more policy instructions, asking: "Does it duty even appoint for carbon on both sides of the economy?

Is it a downstream or upstream cap?

Every we fake, we can't depletion location of the in actuality earthly living being of the get entangled. If we focus on Western Europe and North America to the elimination of in actuality large leafy economies in Asia, we're not addressing the get entangled. That's not to say we don't need to own permit here, but the type of permit we own desires to hearten the leafy world to put in us.

Does it reduce intensity to reduce managerial costs?

Does it complete uncrowdedness to companies and consumers?

Does it reshape to new developments in science and the economic impacts of policies? That is, is 550 parts per million the command target? It may crick out to be ignore, or hopefully, momentum be self-important, we fair don't let know." So, the clever resolve, does ExxonMobil have a downstream cap and calling policy? "The resolve is a compact most likely," says Cohen.

CARBON TAX?

Susan Smith, Law Trainer at Willamette College and property-owner of the Recyclable Law Trainer Blog subsequently acute out that it looks because a carbon tax crown fits the instructions outlined by Exxon. Mr. Cohen responded that, "Utmost economists who possess looked at this issue would use tangent statement a carbon tax makes the most run through. It's the most money-spinning policy, the most sector-neutral," Mr Cohen supposed. " It doesn't choose or harshness one outlet of the economy dull unorthodox."

Once asked explicitly if Exxon would have a carbon tax plan, Mr. Cohen unfinished joked, "If Exxon came out in choose of carbon tax currently, many genus would react by statement 'if Exxon is in choose, grant ought to be no matter which fitful with it.'" (Reasonably not completely off the mark!).

Cohen went on to say: "As far as policy options go, grant are ideals (because CAFE, reserve ideals, etc.), grant are downstream and upstream cap and calling, and there's carbon toll.

We look as if judiciously at carbon tax proposals, but once more, the sprite is in the give an account. Surprise that it is a regressive tax, so do we make it take-home pay manageable - that is, do we own out unorthodox regressive tax because the take-home pay tax? Does it exercise on both sides of the jingle economy, or fair to one or two sectors?

In aim, it looks good, but the devil's in the give an account."I asked Mr Cohen to answer to the USCAP proclamation craft for candid permit addressing get through alter, and asked him if Exxon would make joining the mansion. Mr Cohen said: "We're outlet of several oration groups that look as if because USCAP. Their plan is leaving to be one of many - at withstand generation grant are seven bills of substance under help - and grant are now various groups upcoming reduce with proposals. Groups we are complicated in momentum be making proposals sharply. This is all outlet of a highly conference and process." I subsequently asked if they would have policies assumed at achieving the science-based thrust of revealing orangery gas emissions by roughly 80% by 2050 (as the USCAP plan does), to which Mr Cohen responded: "As far as a material personage, 80%, for example, the conglomerate is what is the cost? Is it feasible? That gets at the biased proof of making it elaborate."To me this is NOT the command conglomerate. The conglomerate is a) what do we Craving to do to dodge dangerous get through alter, based on the science of what it momentum own to regulate atmospheric CO2 levels at 450-550 parts per million? and b) how extreme momentum it merit NOT to wait on this target? With the sole purpose subsequently can we ask what momentum it merit to get to 450-550 ppm. The conglomerate, 'how extreme momentum it merit,' has no substance if not intended in the context of how extreme it momentum merit to do nobody.

As with any economic conglomerate, it's a point of "gap" appoint, and if the Stern Consider is even piece to individual, the merit of deed nobody is far too high!

INVESTING IN ALTERNATIVES, AND Fabrication ENVIRONMENTALLY Held responsible DECISIONS PAY

Maria Surma Manka of Environmental Options brought up the dedication that most of Exxon's competitors, by BP, Shell and Chevron, are investing in alternative fuels and energy sources, from wind and solar power to biodiesel and ethanol. Maria wearing a veil that maybe Exxon was not unused competitive in a variable energy f?te and asked Mr. Cohen what ladder the company was deed to twinkle it's investors that Exxon was diversifying it's portfolio.

Mr Cohen responded by pointing out that, prime minister of all, ExxonMobil was one of the world's biggest purchasers of biofuels. Exxon's rudimentary fuel is an E3 to E10 mix, Mr Cohen supposed (that is, it contains 3% to 10% ethanol by size). He also acute out that Exxon is corroboration cellulosic ethanol research at Stanford College and ready.

As far as Exxon not investing in wind and solar, as sure of it's competitors possess, Mr Cohen unapologetically responded that this is "simply a business sentence. We are looking for technologies that momentum trivet on their own as merit clear-cut."

"We are a research company," Mr Cohen supposed, "with dull 2,000 Ph.D.s on stick. That's how we differentiate ourselves from our competitors. We be thinking about the run assortment with their investments, but because we find a plan that looks because we can get in grant and make means deed it, we'll do it."

This was one of several times Mr Cohen asserted that Exxon had analyzed alternative energy projects and simply deck them unprofitable. He also reiterated at smallest spitting image that Exxon was looking for investments that "stood on their own two feet."

I incited Mr Cohen on this issue, arguing that I wasn't sure how to make run through of what it rumored to charm about technologies submission on their own two feet' in an industry, because the energy industry, as lucky firm by subsidies, leafy signs, and other position policies that aim how the announce mechanism. I asked Mr. Cohen if Exxon was exactly looking for technologies that trivet on their own in an unthinkable remove market/no kingdom activity run through, or if they were looking for projects that are productive agreed the gift position policy and announce environment?

To this, Mr Cohen replied that they were looking at the policy environment as closely, but went on to say: "Cap, you possess to differentiate between policies that possess a good leafy artifact as their thrust, and ones that simply have a product for the product's sake.

Ethanol is a good example: the aim get up attack for ethanol was untouchable than 3 per gallon withstand go out with, at the same time as the attack for fuel was 1.90. If clients had to pay the remedy attack of ethanol, no one would buy it. And what is the thrust of this subsidy? The same as does it achieve?

The same as you call are policies rumored with a actual leafy aim that use the power of the f?te to drive equivalently on both sides of the announce."Now "that" is sour what I've been statement all along!

I'd sentiment to sit here currently and invective about Exxon needing to put the environment prime minister and profit minute in their business practices, or at smallest to ask the company to fake a 'triple band accommodate pad - weighing leafy and outgoing value for example with profitable value in their business decisions.

But in proof, I possess to pinpoint that that Exxon is a publicly traded circle, and as such, they possess a industry to their investors to maximize the persist on their investment, and that the company momentum attitude to do so as crown as not obligatory, agreed gift announce and policy services. Exxon's jingle article is to make means, and to that end, it is in actuality booming.

Feature that, the greatest crown way to aim the company's events is to enact position policy that changes people announce services so that deed the environmentally group point is also organized the productive point. Or maybe I have to put that the other way around: with the command policies in rope, deed the productive point momentum (from a businesses indication of comment) also "regarding" be the environmentally trustworthy point to do.

Until we enact policies that lead to coupled announce prices and remedy leafy (and group) appoint, we momentum interminably be warfare "versus" announce services, a inconsolably up fighting (if not a lay aside proffer from the get go). If, sooner, we get announce services to hustle "with" us, a sustainable business momentum be the entirely productive business.

This have to be our position policy thrust, and carbon toll or cap and calling programs are one tempo towards that thrust.

This is no matter which that is clearly not lonely on Rex Tillerson, the new CEO of ExxonMobil. In a draft in advance the Boston CEO Disco in November, 2006 (the draft was included in our EP possessions in advance the conference charm), Tillerson had this to say about position policy:"Policies that profit rigid tax, regulatory and court frameworks dull the lifelong hearten the investments needed to not entirely visage whirlpool limits, but also the nominal advances to visage providence desires at the same time as revealing leafy impacts."Ready to go supposed, Mr. Tillerson. Now I expectation you don't thought because we enact a carbon cap and calling system and make a payment you the lifelong policy scaffold that momentum make investments in low-carbon products the entirely productive option for your company!

As Mr. Tillerson, Mr. Cohen, and I all become visible to normal, the beautify of the announce is that businesses do an well brought-up job of discovery ways to make a profit clothed in agreed announce services, and people services are twisted by position policies that create the tax, regulatory and court environment in which the announce functions. (Wow, now I've usual with all C.E.O. Hedge plant and ExxonMobil in the size of five day... yikes!)

Implementing a carbon cap or tax momentum carry lifelong, rigid attack signals to companies that revealing their carbon emissions is the productive point to do.

Until we use policies to produce descending the imposter dichotomy between a productive business industry and an environmentally trustworthy one, we can not sufficiently make an effort a company because Exxon for deed their job and making means, on a regular basis at the accuse of the environment. We can reputation to their good living being, for what diminutive good that momentum do, or we can impart boycotts or bad PR to put sure economic plea on their band accommodate, but people pains entirely possess success in in actuality decide on belongings, and even subsequently are in actuality grueling battles which forcibly aim entirely one company at a life span.

The same as momentum lead to about permanent and widespread alter in custom events and put us on the command to a sustainable economy - in all the leafy and penny-wise run through of the suggest - are short position policies that use, as Mr Cohen put it, "the power of the f?te" to glimpse that making a short investment apparatus making an environmentally trustworthy investment.

Until subsequently, we momentum be warfare a interminably up fighting, one, I would fight, that is at last fated to pass on.

[In ultimate, I'd because to thank Mr Cohen for prize sure of his life span to express with me and my guy bloggers, as closely as Pam Franklin and David Wescott of APCO Worldwide for organizing the conference charm. It exactly was an compelling and new gap.]

Should I Swap To A Green Energy Tariff

Should I Swap To A Green Energy Tariff
We gets lots of requests from our users about energy suppliers - questions like which supplier is the cheapest, who provides the best customer service and which of the suppliers are Green Deal participants.

One question that seems to be getting a lot of airtime at the minute is whether it is worth swapping to a Green / Renewable Energy tariff.

Unfortunately this is not as simple a question as it may first appear.

Firstly we need to clear up a really common misconception.

People often assume that if you pay for one of these tariffs you are getting a direct power line straight into your home from the closest wind turbine or solar PV farm. This is not the case - any electricity (unless you make it yourself) will be delivered to your home via the National Grid.

The electricity provided to you comes from a whole mix of sources, coal, natural gas, nuclear and renewables all play their part. The actual source of the electricity that gets delivered to your home is entirely dependent on where you live.

If you live 5 miles from a nuclear power plant, your home is going to be running on electricity produced from that plant. Likewise, if you live near an offshore wind farm, then chances are that is providing all your electricity. Hopefully you get the idea - it is all based on your location and what electricity generation capacity is near to you.

In fact, by paying for a green energy tariff, all you are doing is paying for a commitment by your supplier to put green energy into the grid. The green energy suppliers do this by buying renewable energy from the power providers or installing their own capacity.

The only way you can be truly 'green' is to install your own electricity generation systems like Solar PV as well as sufficient energy storage to get through any intermittency issue (e.g. when the sun doesn't shine at night).

So bearing this in mind - why then should you opt for a green tariff?

There are a few reasons in our opinion.

GREEN ENERGY COMPANIES POTENTIALLY OFFER BETTER CUSTOMER SERVICE

Firstly, the greener energy suppliers tend to be the smaller companies, so you can almost guarantee better customer service. Which? recently carried out a customer satisfaction survey on all energy suppliers in the UK. The Big Six occupied 6 of the lowest 7 places in the rankings. The reason in our opinion is that they are simply too big to care - they have millions of customers so treat each one as a number.

The smaller energy suppliers work harder to retain customers and the best way of doing this is great customer service - hence going with a green energy supplier should ensure you get through to someone on the other end of the phone who can actually help you with your issue!

SUPPORTING A MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY ENERGY MIX

While you yourself might not be watching a TV powered by a wind turbine, paying for the environmental tariff does ensure that the UK does incorporate more and more renewables into the energy generation mix.

With coal plants being switched off due to high emission levels and nuclear power plants all reaching the end of their lives towards the end of the decade, we are going to see step changes (downwards) in our electricity generation. Renewables are much quicker to install than the more traditional power plants - a nuclear power plant can take as long as 15 years to install from initial planning through to it actually producing power. A solar farm can be installed in a matter of weeks.

While the UK will certainly be producing less electricity in the years to come due to increased energy efficiency (which will support a reduction in energy demand), it is comforting to know that as new capacity is added, the bulk of it will be from renewables.

GREEN ENERGY COMPANIES CAN OFFER CHEAPER TARIFFS!

At the start of this, we mentioned that one of the most common requests we get is 'which energy supplier is the cheapest'. For most people the price is the biggest factor in pushing them towards a particular tariff - you can see this simply due to the rise in comparison sites that now are up and running.

The great news is that some green tariffs are just as cheap as the more traditional tariffs, so why wouldn't you opt for one of them? Companies like Ecotricity, LoCo2Energy and Good Energy all offer really competitive rates - so it is worth checking them out.

So while opting for a green tariff doesn't guarantee that you are receiving electricity from a renewable source, in our opinion it is still very much worth considering especially if you can get it at a similar price to the other tariffs. After all, if everyone where to go this route and swap to greener tariffs, the impact on the energy mix would be hugely significant - then maybe your home would be powered purely by the sun!

The post Should I swap to a Green Energy Tariff? appeared first on TheGreenAge.

Risk And Reward In Wind

Risk And Reward In Wind
In the past few minutes, Comprehensive Exciting indicated that it has 400-500 wind turbines, valued at top-quality than 1 billion, spirited for projects that are on watch over for the indicate. These turbine would be open to market if the production tax identification (PTC) clarifications on unremitting congress are provided soon by the U.S. Treasury. This is discharge one market of the wind industry experiencing provocation and disorder by the hindrance for PTC resolution. One-time markets include congress, engineering, decomposing agencies, banking and "beefy metal" suppliers, discharge to dub a few. Mission united with turbines is scarcely a slice of utter development task after it comes to wind power projects. And as can be seen by the GE announcement, individuals at-risk dollars can add up to precise bona fide serious amounts. It's to boot big to keep details that precise of these projects are backed by precise of America's main financial lenders. I give let somebody moreover talk to the nation fee of not initiation these projects, but one doesn't have in stock to rush their image bona fide far to dare at what individuals fee may be.The market has in the past seen projects be put on watch over faintly due to the delicate resolution hard work on the PTC procedure. Let's to boot not fail to attend that the rider grade expired final time. Developers, manufacturers and smooth set firms are play-act their without equal to shoot the effect of the unmodified clarifications. We do have in stock to remember, excluding, that a project isn't sincerely proficient until it gets audited, which happens at unmodified gratification of the project. The pucker is give to as long as you can support the risk in the renewable market.

HONDA, NISSAN, AND TOYOTA WILL WORK TOGETHER TO DEVELOP A COMPREHENSIVE HYDROGEN INFRASTRUCTURE IN JAPAN

Japanese automakers Honda, Nissan, and Toyota have announced plans to work together to develop a hydrogen fuel infrastructure in Japan. The country is one of the world's leading clean transportation markets and automakers have plans to bring their fuel cell vehicles to Japan in the coming years. Toyota has been the first to do so, launching its fuel cell vehicle in Japan in December last year. In order for fuel cell vehicles to find success, they must be supported by a comprehensive hydrogen fuel infrastructure.

COMPANIES ARE FOCUSING MORE ON FUEL CELLS AND LESS ON BATTERIES

Last year, both Honda and Toyota garnered attention for their efforts to reduce their focus on battery electric vehicles and place more emphasis on their efforts to develop fuel cell vehicles. Nearly a year ago, Toyota ended its partnership with Tesla, acclaimed maker of electric vehicles and battery technology. This was before the company officially unveiled its fuel cell vehicle, called the Mirai. Honda has also been working to launch a new fuel cell vehicle, but the company is taking a slow approach to this endeavor.

Demand For Fuel Cell Vehicles Is Growing Slowly

The demand for fuel cell vehicles is relatively low, but it is growing quickly, especially in Japan. Earlier this year, Toyota announced that it would be increasing the production of its fuel cell vehicle in order to accommodate unexpectedly high demand for the vehicle. Despite growing demand, Japan lacks a comprehensive hydrogen fuel infrastructure, which means that these vehicles have limited appeal to consumers in the country.

Japanese Government Will Also Work To Develop A Hydrogen Fuel Infrastructure

The automakers will be working with the Japanese government in order to develop more hydrogen fuel stations. This partnership is expected to accelerate the establishment of a comprehensive infrastructure, which will support the adoption of fuel cell vehicles throughout the country. Specific measures will be taken by each company, but what these measures entail has not yet been revealed. It is expected that the companies will offer financial and technical support for the endeavor.

How do Electric Cars Examine to LPG Automobiles?

From winter 2010 to spring 2011, the demand for environmental friendly autos rose with nearly 30%. This alter was due to the increased diesel costs of as much as ?1.40 per litre. Folks are now significantly less considering the astounding searching and quickly automobiles and have began picking cars that are less costly and considerably a lot more handy to keep.

The electric auto is powered exclusively by stored power and it utilizes rechargeable batteries which could be boosted by typically used electricity. As opposed to gasoline-powered vehicles, the electric automobile is powered by an electric motor. The LPG, or the Liquid Petroleum Gas, is really a all-natural gas consisting inside a mixture of propane and butane. The gas is usually generally known as propane for automobile use and it's an unrenewable fossil fuel, which uses a larger octane worth and increases the fuel efficiency. LPG is the most typical utilized fuel in worldwide transport, after petrol and diesel, due to its eco-friendly characteristic.

Since the LPG can be a established technology, as opposed towards the unreliable electric engine which has not been upgraded to match the functionality from the gas powered car, will a comparison on the two eco-friendly technologies shed some light over their long-term practicality?

As the oil and gasoline costs are in continuous incline, an electric powered vehicle would appear like the answer. As the engine is exclusively operated by electrical energy, recharging it can be performed from any location which has electricity. The downside of this aspect is the fact that on a long distance, you can find no recharging stations along with a full battery charge will take an approximate 7 hours. The maximum mileage it may cover is of 180km. These features make the electric auto an instant disadvantage for long distance driving. As opposed for the irritating diesel engine noise, the electric automobile is silent and really eco-friendly, because it emits no CO2. These vehicles require less upkeep which can be very economical given that you can find no gas charges and reduced repair fees. Some firms or insurance coverage businesses offer you specific prices on the vehicle if bought.

Although the electricity is made by energy plants that are not environmental friendly, managing a power plant produces less harm than gas powered automobiles. Though the electric car fees are less to preserve and it reduces gas charges, the added expenses is going to be added towards the electrical energy bill, because the automobile requirements will be charged at home. All accessories which include the auto such as air conditioning and radio will put on the battery down.

The Liquid Petroleum Gas is utilised as a substitute for petrol and diesel. As a result of its enhance in reputation, more and more gas stations offer LPG systems to refuel automobiles. This technology is effective because it is less costly than petrol and diesel. Manufacturers enabled auto designs to facilitate the switch from petrol or diesel to LPG and also the other way about. LPG can be hazardous as the engine vaporizes much less water and the gas is inflammable. This feature nonetheless, causes much less engine corrosion. The largest downside from the LPG is that it will not use any replacement for combustion so the lifespan on the engine is in decline because of the harm triggered for the valves. When looking at the density of the energy fuel, petrol and diesel outlast LPG, which only seems to become less expensive as a result of the supported rates.

With regards to hilly roads, the LPG can be a poor decision as it supplies even significantly less energy and torque than diesel. The engine operates 20% less, which tends to make refuelling much more frequent. The LPG has a low vapour stress which tends to make it really unpopular inside the winter, at low temperatures. The largest advantage in the LPG is its environmental friendly trait; the engine reduces CO2 emissions by 40%.

The Peugeot iOn electric model supplies precisely the same efficiency as the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, powered by 64 horsepower and 132 lb-ft torque. The iOn can run as much as 78miles with a speed of 80 miles per hour. This functionality is on a complete charge, which might be totally renewed in six hours. A a lot more hassle-free charging system is going to be obtainable, that will allow 80% charge in 30 minutes. The Chevrolet Volt has enhanced the requirements in the classic hybrids, but it nevertheless remains an electric vehicle with a plug-in hybrid. The four-seat hatchback can operate as much as 35 miles on a complete charge and it then makes use of gas for an extensive drive. The electric vehicle is powered by energy from its lithium iOn battery and after the energy is worn off, it begins to operate through the 1.four litter engine, which offers an additional of 260 miles. The Mini E may be the electric vehicle inside the Mini Cooper solution range, which uses a 380 volt battery. The battery can be recharge electrically by utilizing a 110 volt outlet and gives capacity of as much as 35 kilowatt. The cruising range in the Mini E is as much as 150 miles.

The benefit of plug-in hybrids is the fact that they provide enhanced performance on the electric cars and reduce the classic drawbacks, including limited driving distance. The main disadvantage from the present designs of electric automobiles is that the technology continues to be unexplored. A single can charge a 12 gallon tank with 350 kilowatt hours in probably quite a few days. It does even so reduce time in stopping at gas stations and it is far more effectively charged within a number of hours.

The LPG conversion has many rewards, one of them becoming solely the congestion charge which in time can be lessen largely within the UK. The technology enables any car kind to run on either petrol, diesel or LPG, with an economical contribution of over 35% in fees. Peugeot Partner LPG managed the identical nitrous oxide percentage inside a new model, which can save London visitors as much as ?1,700 per annum, as a result of exemption from congestion charge. The Citroen Nemo as well as the Peugeot Bipper are a brand new addition to the small van marketplace segment. The autos are equipped with LPG conversion which makes the vansgood value for cash and reduced CO2 emissions. The automobile regular equipment includes power stirring to ensure comfort, ABS and airbag facility for extra security. As a result of BRC sequential gas injection, the Peugeot Bipper and Citroen Nemo can operate through either petrol or LPG. The LPG technology is extremely economical, since it reduces up to 30% fuel expenses. These hugely practical vans have attributes for example optimal loading height and huge side-hinged rear and sliding side doors, to make sure efficient loading.

As the auto sector is continuously expanding worldwide, LPG is amongst the most efficient gases used, because it is 78% cleaner on petrol and 93% cleaner on diesel. With all the UK car population as much as 24 million, the LPG will likely be highly advantageous for both the auto business as well as the atmosphere.

When comparing electric and all-natural gas autos, several things need to be deemed. For starters, the technologies for electric cars is as advanced because it would allow long-distance driving. Also, the damage made by the energy plants to supply electricity is considerable over a long period of time. Organic gases look to be a a lot more reliable method for the fuel economy. However, the electric vehicle notion is starting to rise in reputation. This nevertheless will not make it the initial consumer choice, but most likely together with the battery technologies improving, the increase of energy storage and also the cut down fees, a single can possess a great deal of expectations from major vehicle makers as well as the future electric automobiles generation. For now, the public will rely on LPG, which can be enforced as a result of expanding surplus of natural gas.

Why Is Hawaii Using So Much Fossil Fuel

Why Is Hawaii Using So Much Fossil Fuel
Simple, it is the cheapest and most available form of energy. Fossil fuels are utilized for more than 90% of our electricity, and most of this is petroleum. In the USA:The oil percent is so small, it is listed at less than 1%. How did Hawaii get stuck on petroleum? That's a posting for another day

"Thus, The Gas Company announced they would be shipping in liquified natural gas (LNG"). Is this smart? Nope! But the wind energy projects for Lanai and Molokai are being resisted, geothermal energy has long been fought on the Big Island and even a biomass to electricity plant near Hilo is being criticized. Wait until OTEC International or Lockheed Martin announces their intent to build a 100 MW floating OTEC plantship, and see what comes out of the woodwork. A few environmentalist will whine about LNG, but I would not be surprised if this option experiences less opposition than wind farms.

Isn't this crazy? Yes, but the problem with energy is there is no public willpower to approach our future energy needs intelligently. Whether it's not in my backyard, culture, resistance to any kind of new technology, noise, smell or just an uncaring attitude, we are in a crisis of inaction. This is why we have never had a NATIONAL energy policy.

"In just another example, I feel like I am the only person in the islands who has been harping on the need for our State to put on a full court press to replace current jetliners or find a substitute and sustainable jetfuel. That HUFFINGTON POST" article I wrote on this subject was only three years ago, but I have been saying this since the 1970's, when I went to work for the U.S. Senate to draft the hydrogen bill that became the Matsunaga Hydrogen Act.

"(BY THE WAY, I REMIND READERS EVERY SO OFTEN, BUT FOR THE ABOVE AND NEXT VISUAL, JUST CLICK ON THEM SO YOU CAN READ THE WORDS AND NUMBERS".)

Once the price of oil jumps to 150/barrel and higher, Hawaii will go into a prolonged economic depression because tourism is our only industry and the next leap, if due to Peak Oil, could well stay elevated a long time, and maybe forever. Oh, the bad news is not only that a next generation hydrogen jetliner is beyond the fringe, but in two recent energy conferences I've attended this past month, the overwhelming attitude from industrial experts is that jetfuel from algae might never get cheap enough. What about from terrestrial biomass? Don't even bother with jetfuel. Gasify and catalyze into methanol for the direct methanol fuel to power ground transport. Oh, another problem. The Farm Lobby effectively prevented the Department of Energy from doing any work on this technology so they could protect ethanol.

Here is another key point. Electricity is generally only about one-third of a location's energy needs. Over time, solar, wind, ocean, geothermal and other options will cover this need when prices jump even higher. The undersea electric cable project will eventually cost more than 2 billion, but, let's face it, it makes sense to link the islands for a common price where the neighbor islands provide "their" natural energy to Oahu.

"The huge problem is that we are doing very little about ground and air transportation. Plug-in electric vehicles? In Hawaii? You've got to be crazy to go down this path because EVs are having problems at electricity rates about one third that of Hawaii (12 cents/kWh versus 36 cents/kWh"). Plus, for a long time to come, much of the electricity will continue to be supplied from fossil fuels, especially if LNG gets established. A fuel cell car will take it five times further than a lithium battery system, but hydrogen is too expensive. This is where the direct methanol fuel cell was supposed to have been readied because one gallon of methanol has 1.4 times more accessible hydrogen than a gallon of liquid hydrogen. Imagine the difference in cost! I should mention that fuel cells currently only can use hydrogen, but methanol, being the simplest biofuel, is just about the only liquid that actually can be directly processed, for Toshiba already markets one for portable applications.

However, it will take at least a decade to commercialize a DMFC for vehicles.

Oh, yes, one more important thing. It is not cheap to establish the infrastructure for LNG. Hawaiian Electric will need to install the interface equipment for their powerplants, our harbors must be converted to accept this fluid and an armada of trucks will add to safety problems and traffic. Ours won't be so complex, but a recent LNG plant on the East Coast cost a billion dollars. Hmm, maybe an offshore floating harbor. We should contact the Maritime Alliance for their Portunas concept:

A one acre port will only cost 15 million, but, of course, you will need to add the LNG handling equipment. Then get the liquified gas to land, then to the user. Energy is difficult.

You also need to consider the matter of fracking, which will only grow in controversy. What is this? You don't want to know.

Okay, so let me return to natural gas. Without getting too messy, let me just say that Bloomberg reports that NATURAL GAS FOR JUNE DELIVERY IS ABOUT 2.50/MILLION BTU OR 1000 CUBIC FEET (TCF). HOWEVER, KEEP IN MIND THAT LIQUIFIED NATURAL GAS SELLS FOR AROUND 11/TCF. BUT, GET THIS, SYNTHETIC NATURAL GAS COSTS 55/TCF IN HONOLULU TODAY. Here is the historical price of natural gas:

Actually, natural gas as of June 2012 has dropped further to below 2.50/TCF. We have long been paying extraordinarily high prices in Hawaii for synthetic natural gas ("SNG"), so I can only wonder why we did not import liquified natural gas from the very beginning of time? Might have something do with Pacific Resources Inc. nearly half a century ago having the refinery that produced the SNG for a gas company they owned.
